City Districts

Districts of Tönisvorst

Two city districts – Vorst and St. Tönis – as well as several settlements on the outskirts together amount to the City of Tönisvorst.

Here you can see the central part of the disrict Vorst: The market with the entrance of the cathredral St. Godehard and the water fountain with the frog, mascot of the district Vorst.

Vorst was already settled in the Stone Age. Today, it is a modern district with a population of around 7,000, an optimal residential area, a traffic reduced town centre and a rich club life. Its village character is one of the main advantages of Vorst, where country traditions, for example village festivals, the Gotthardus Procession and marksmen’s festivals, are celebrated according to old rituals and customs. The beautiful manors may also be found in Vorst, remnants from Frankish times that have shaped the countryside. The Huverheide is home to the largest apple producing area of the region and further to the West, in the direction of Süchteln, you can enjoy the typically Lower Rhine landscape with pollarded willows, marsh lands and small wooded areas. Classic outskirts include Kehn – a former Upper Honschaft (an administrative unit in the middle ages) - Schmitzheide, Huverheide and Hahnenweide. A primary school, a youth centre, a senior citizen centre, a senior house, two family centres and a kindergarten complete the infrastructure.

St. Tönis has its origins in the middle ages and, today, is home to about 23,000 inhabitants. Probably unique in the region is the historic church square, which has been part of the city outline since the Middle Ages. Here stands the city’s oldest patrician house: The Mertens Farm. Many quiet courtyards characterize the town centre with its many family-owned businesses. The connection to Forstwald offers excellent opportunities for recreation and relaxation. The infrastructure is completed by three secondary schools, four elementary schools, several family centres and kindergartens as well as a swim centre and a hospital with a senior citizen centre.
